One Mom's journey to raise empowered mixed-race children

Polo isn’t just for rich people!

Yesterday was one of those perfect San Diego days. The sun was out, the ocean breeze was blowing and the temp was a perfect 78 degrees. It was downright outstanding!

So what do you do on a such a perfect day? Well, in San Diego, you have so many choices, it’s hard to decide. But on this particular weekend, we chose to head to the San Diego Polo Clubpolo and catch a few matches. And in case you’re wondering, you don’t have to be rich to enjoy a polo match.

In fact, it’s one of the most budget friendly ways to spend a Sunday with your family, especially if you have little kids.  You see, there are different ways and different types of people that watch Polo.

Of course the “Bentley” driving type are there. They have the “tent” tickets, season pass parking and seem to really enjoy the private party at the end of the match. I mean they REALLY enjoy the party. Let me tell you. People with money [real money, not $75K a year money, but $750K a year type of money], they know how to party! So, if this is your crowd, then the tent is where you’ll watch the match from.

But, A Day of Polowhat if you’re the working class guy or gal and just want to spend a nice day on the coast [the polo fields are in Del Mar] and introduce your kids to the power of Polo. Because let me tell ya, those horses running by at full speed is sure to amaze any little kid.

Since we fall in this category and like to enjoy life at a bargain, we attend the Polo matches on a budget! Guess what they allow and it’s fantastic if you have kids. You can tailgate! That’s right, tailgate.

You do have to call ahead for a spot, but it’s free to reserve.  They charge $25 per carload, so it’s pretty affordable, considering. You park on the grounds and back right into the field that the match is played on, so your view is spectacular!

With your cooler packed up with your own food, beer, soda, wine, etc., it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than the tent.  Don’t forget blankets [especially if your little one still naps], chairs and umbrella. MJ nappingPlus, the fields are huge, so we make sure and have balls, frisbees and kites for the kids. They have a blast and us adults, well, we enjoy our beverages, straight from the cooler and ice cold.

So, for right around $50, our family of 4, plus my brother, had a feast [KFC is great for tailgating], enjoyed some cold beers with a nice family also tailgating next to us, watched 2 polo matches, stomped divots and loved every minute spent with our two beautiful daughters. I don’t know if it ever gets better than this!
