Spicy Hot Colors: Colores Picantes – Review

Spicy Hot Colors: Colores Picantes
If you’re looking for a book that is fresh and fun and helps your little one learn their colors, in English and Spanish!  Check out this great book:

Spicy Hot Colors: Colores Picantes

Written by Sherry Shahan
Illustrated by Paula Barragán

Editorial Review and Description:

Colors explode off the page in this energetic, jazzy picture book introducing readers to colors in English and Spanish. In a style brimming with rhythm and syncopation, Shahan introduces nine colors by interweaving images and dance steps. Ecuadoran artist Paula Barragán’s computer-enhanced cut-paper illustrations capture the rhythm and vivacity of the text. This book, which Publishers Weekly called “a feast for the eyes and ears,” received a NAPPA Gold Award. Spicy Hot Colors will also be featured on the PBS Kids program Between the Lions, on September 24, 2007.

Guided reading level E

MY REVIEW:  Artist, Paula Barrigan really does capture the eye and matches the text wonderfully! The poetic word are music to your ears and easy to accentuate. Of course, my 22 month old LOVES me to read with “flair” and that’s easy to do with Spicy Hot Colors.

Older kids will have fun finding and reading aloud with you. And they’ll be learning some Spanish at the same time. Oh, and the finale….LOVED it! Brings together all the colors with very fun and lively words: The spicy hot colors sizzle/on a Saturday night./be-bop-bolero/bim-bam….OLE!

Don’t forget to finish FLAIR!
